Now is the time (if you haven’t already) to look in your closet and decide what is needed for newness as cold weather is here. My favorite investment is outerwear for so many reasons. Unlike other winter staple pieces, you can wear your coats and jackets on repeat, daily if you like, to keep you warm and chic. In colder months, it is usually the first thing people see when you are walking into a restaurant or down the street. There is no need for an overage of outerwear like other wardrobe essentials. You only really need a few: dressy evening coat, mild weather, cold weather, and sub-frigid temperatures. That’s four, and you likely have one or two that are still wearable from seasons past.
While you can get away with saving here, this category is underrated and makes the most significant statement in your winter wardrobe. Have you heard or read about the obsession with Demi Moore’s golden-yellow oversized wrap coat with massive lapels and dramatic shoulders with epaulets? Read about that here, in W Magazine, to see what the fuss is about, or watch her latest film (fair warning: some of the scenes induce nightmares), “Substance.” I was inspired to write this newsletter the day after seeing that movie; that’s how much of an impact that yellow coat had on me.
My favorite outerwear pieces can be seen on my Instagram page @lisasherchambers_style, and anyone who knows or follows me knows I like luxury and bold statements. But I didn’t always wear luxury brand outerwear, and many of my clients are looking for value when they shop. I consider all brands when searching for investment and statement pieces. The most important attributes of perfect outerwear are chicness and weather suitability.
I suggest opting for a color other than black unless the piece has some interesting hardware or embroidery. A bold color, sparkly fabrics, and unusual buttons and closures go a long way, but remember that these elements can raise the price.
Below are a few of my favorite selections for outerwear that fit in at least one category at a variety of price points:
Khaite Rothen Coat – Army Melange
Alexander McQueen Long Wrap Suiting Cashmere Coat
