Now is the time (if you haven’t already) to look in your closet and decide what is needed for newness as cold weather is here. My favorite investment is outerwear for so many reasons. Unlike other winter staple pieces, you can wear your coats and jackets on repeat, daily if you like, to keep you warm and chic. In colder months, it is usually the first thing people see when you are walking into a restaurant or down the street. There is no need for an overage of outerwear like other wardrobe essentials. You only really need a few: dressy evening coat, mild weather, cold weather, and sub-frigid temperatures. That’s four, and you likely have one or two that are still wearable from seasons past.
While you can get away with saving here, this category is underrated and makes the most significant statement in your winter wardrobe. Have you heard or read about the obsession with Demi Moore’s golden-yellow oversized wrap coat with massive lapels and dramatic shoulders with epaulets? Read about that here, in W Magazine, to see what the fuss is about, or watch her latest film (fair warning: some of the scenes induce nightmares), “Substance.” I was inspired to write this newsletter the day after seeing that movie; that’s how much of an impact that yellow coat had on me.
My favorite outerwear pieces can be seen on my Instagram page @lisasherchambers_style, and anyone who knows or follows me knows I like luxury and bold statements. But I didn’t always wear luxury brand outerwear, and many of my clients are looking for value when they shop. I consider all brands when searching for investment and statement pieces. The most important attributes of perfect outerwear are chicness and weather suitability.
I suggest opting for a color other than black unless the piece has some interesting hardware or embroidery. A bold color, sparkly fabrics, and unusual buttons and closures go a long way, but remember that these elements can raise the price.
Below are a few of my favorite selections for outerwear that fit in at least one category at a variety of price points:
Khaite Rothen Coat – Army Melange
Alexander McQueen Long Wrap Suiting Cashmere Coat
Courreges Buckle Twill Long Coat
Helsa Classic Oversized Trench
Wardrobe NYC Double Breasted Coat
Mercer Collective Belted Alexa Trench (Navy)
Mackage Shia 2-in-1 Double Face Wool Coat with Removable bib
Mackage Ceyla Belted Handmade Double-Face Virgin Wool Coat
Yves Salomon Reversible Hooded Down Coat
And finally, my favorite,
Maison Schiaparelli Iconic Measuring Tape Coat (Message me on how to purchase)

Usually, I write and post about style tips or my personal style guidance. After a whirlwind of worldwide travel to the most fashionable cities during what’s now known as Fashion Month, I thought I would share my experience as a stylist with a background in the corporate world, from behind the scenes at Fashion Month in New York, London, and Paris. I skipped Milan, although it was initially in the plan. It’s hard enough to pack for a week away; a month, I thought, is too long. That said, I am considering taking on all four cities in February for Fashion Month.
A big part of Fashion Month involved Vogue100, which I joined in June 2024. I wasn’t sure what membership would include, but I knew it meant invitations to exclusive fashion-related events, some of which I already had planned on attending, so I figured it is worth a try. I have enjoyed getting to know so many wonderful fashion lovers all over the world, and the events are just incredibly special. Email me if you are interested in specifics, and I am happy to share!
I love to attend shows with friends and clients, so if you are interested in attending events or fashion shows, I would like to offer this to you whenever possible.
What I love about attending runway shows and fashion weeks is sharing my observations about collections and style tips with others.
- Denim is STILL everywhere and ESPECIALLY makes sense in rainy weather because denim doesn’t damage easily.
- The shows I attended were:
New York: Proenza Schouler, Bach Mai, Jonathan Simkhai, Monse, Cynthia Rowley and Wiederhoeft (favorite: Wiederhoeft)
London: Richard Quinn, Emilia Wickstead, Erdem, Simone Rocha and Huishan Zhang (favorite: Erdem)
Paris: Mugler, Schiaparelli, Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton (favorite: Louis Vuitton and Schiaparelli)The numerous fashion festivities between runway shows kept me breathless and in fashion heaven, as a great place to rejoice and network with other fashion lovers.Although I would have loved to have attended the Chloe show, there was enough coverage to get the gist: layered ruffles, bohemian chic, and earth tones are everywhere.
- Modern, strong silhouettes dominated the runway at Louis Vuitton. Accessories played a big role in the looks, with fresh takes on the LV trunks and nothing like your mother’s or grandmother’s Louis Vuitton handbag. My personal fave is the LV Louis Vuitton Petite Malle.
- Be sure to stay in a hotel known for service. Even if the room is small, service in a French-speaking country is of utmost importance.
- Jetlag is more challenging than I anticipated. I fell asleep quickly but woke up multiple times, unable to fall back for hours. This was super-annoying and caused me to oversleep.
- Be organized or have someone help you coordinate your schedule and looks, coordinating enough looks for your events.
- Take photos of your looks by the event or day. When you see your outfit in a photo from different distances, it appears differently, and at the end of a trip, all you will have are the photos and memories.
- Remember that dressing in your personal best, whatever your style, leads to more productive days and more fulfilled experiences!
My mission is to make people enjoy getting dressed because life is much more fun and productive when you love what you’re wearing.

Now that we are midway into August, although summer is still here, the season will be winding down in a few weeks. As we revisit our social and professional calendars, it’s clear that vacation time is ending. What better way to get back into the swing of work than to invest in the most key staple of all, the daytime essential tote? As a 35-year executive and mom, I have been through no less than 50 totes in my lifetime, and one thing is clear. Nothing in an ensemble makes a statement as much as the bag you carry. Your clothes and shoes are essential for a complete look, but because they are not used daily, they do not require the thought and financial investment needed to purchase an elegant tote. Whether you work in a corporate or creative environment, are a stay-at-home mom, or are retired and working philanthropically, a tote that chicly carries your day’s essentials will empower you to do whatever you’re doing in style.
Below are my favorites and why I chose them. There are a few key common denominators. Form follows function, and function follows form. Meaning their function, their bells and whistles, make them beautiful. They have elegant, zippered pockets or special functional and gorgeous hardware. They have two handles and/or shoulder straps for easy carrying and the ability to navigate inside and find your keys, wallet, phone, or whatever you have. They are also available in multiple colors, patterns, and materials, so if one color or fabrication is sold out, you have options. Lastly, their timeless beauty equates to resale value if kept in relatively good condition.
The Dior book tote has always been perfect for carrying almost anything, especially a laptop and anything structured because of its shape and durability. The problem was its lack of a shoulder strap. Now that Dior has finally added the shoulder strap and incorporated a leather version, it’s closer to perfection than ever. Its structure, though, may be a challenge in addition to its lack of a zip top or some fastener at the top. It is still a great bag for work and carrying all
Pros: Chic, smart, timeless
Cons: are that there is no fastener at the top, making it a challenge for travel. Also, while the shoulder strap helps, it’s awkward as a genuine shoulder bag; you will undoubtedly carry it in your hands like before the shoulder strap was added.
This bag is super chic and understated, similar to The Row’s Margaux, but easier to locate in stores and online and more moderately priced. While not inexpensive, it holds a lot and certainly has enough polish to make a statement at your next meeting. I prefer the black colorway, but the cognac is pretty, too.
Pros: Prada bags are always chic and in demand. The leather is rich but durable. They’re spacious but not massively overwhelming, even on a petite frame.
Cons: It resembles the Margaux, so if you’re striving for something bold and original, this may not be your perfect bag.
If you want a bold, confident statement, why not opt for an oversized animal print tote? Saint Laurent’s totes are durable and beautiful, in solid or print. If your bag complements a powerful Saint Laurent corporate siren outfit, even better!
Pros: Spacious and statement bags, Saint Laurent bags, particularly totes, are always chic for the ‘rich mom aesthetic’ or the corporate executive on the go. They are equally fabulous for travel before, during and after the actual flight or drive.
Cons: The animal print version is a bit pricey, but the leather options offer a great alternative.
This sleek yet oversized tote is constructed of rich, supple leather and adjustable straps.
Pros: it fits everything, and Jil Sander is resurging as one of the ‘it’ brands of the summer and, indeed, into fall.
Cons: The closure has a magnetic fastener inside, and the lining is cream-colored canvas, making pen marks or spots noticeable. It is pricier than the others, and the lack of structure may be a drawback, depending on your needs.
This bag is simple, elegant, smart, and polished. It screams power, and I can never say no to a bag with a belt or strap closure.
Pros: Exquisite bag, sturdy material, ease of entry to find your things, interior pockets, and a long enough drop shoulder strap
Cons: There are none except needing additional snap closure(s)! This bag is perfect!
An elegant choice for understated luxury and at a relatively palatable price point, this option works for all your daytime and early evening events. Ferragamo is steadily gaining appeal in the luxury handbag market, and you really can’t go wrong with this option.
Pros: beautiful, elegant, and smart, soft but structured
Cons: None! Unlike other options, it has a flap over the top for security and closure.
I have always loved this bag and Bottega Veneta’s craftsmanship. The colors in which this bag is available are all stunning.
Pros: It’s beautiful and statement-worthy! It’s functional, with sections inside and interior pockets. The long, braided strap functions as a cross-body or shoulder strap and adds elegance.
Cons: Bottega Veneta bags are on the pricey side and more delicate than most totes. If this is your only tote, it is not your bag.
While a Birkin is, for many, the holy grail of holy grail bags, it warrants its illustrious mystique. The ease of entry to access your things, the way the larger sizes (30, 35, and above) easily store a small laptop, and the pockets inside make it super high functioning. The dimensions, hardware, and many chic ways it can be worn make it the most exquisite bag ever designed. Legend has it that it was created on the back of a napkin on an airplane, demonstrating that love and intention trump all.
Pros: Everything
Cons: The challenges, cost, and otherwise, of obtaining them!

Step into a world where style meets sophistication, where the shimmering allure of poolside glamour seamlessly transitions into the elegance of a dinner soirée. Join renowned luxury stylist Lisa Sher Chambers and her niece, the enchanting beauty guru Carly Smith, as they unveil the artistry behind crafting the perfect poolside-to-dinner looks. With their unparalleled expertise and a dash of creativity, they illuminate how effortless sophistication can elevate every moment, from leisurely lounging under the sun to the refined ambiance of an evening dining experience. Welcome to a realm where fashion and beauty converge, curated by two visionaries who redefine luxury with every stitch and stroke.
What are some trending colors and patterns for poolside this summer?
Get ready to make a splash this summer with anything but beige! Taking cues from Palm Royale and Palm Beach, bright, bold patterns in geometrics and florals are everywhere, injecting a sense of excitement into your poolside fashion. Mix them together for one cohesive look with the same undertones or go for a color block or tonal bold print like Dries Van Noten! Sheers on the beach are elegant and sexy with a hint of allure but no trashiness. Almost alternatively, maxi sheer dresses cover up a bathing suit beautifully and are not that different from what we have seen in the pantless runway trends! For anything beach or pool-related, Cult Gaia never disappoints. While known more for crochet looks, Cult Gaia beach robes can easily be worn as a midi or maxi dress, adding a trendy twist to your poolside ensemble.
Can you recommend some versatile cover-up options that seamlessly transition from poolside to brunch or a beachside dinner?
For a versatile and practical option to take you from pool or beach to brunch, consider anything crochet this summer. While it may not always be the best choice for a formal dinner, it’s perfect for almost anything else. Brands like Cult Gaia, Heidi Klein, and Bananhot offer beautiful sets and dresses that can be worn as sheer dresses over a one—or two-piece swimsuit, seamlessly transitioning from poolside to other occasions. PatBo also makes gorgeous swimwear, cover-ups, and beachy dresses for any invitation that comes your way. Because resort wear is their main focus, you will undoubtedly find something that suits your needs.
Beach to dinner and early to bed is my favorite way to approach summer days! Making the most of daylight hours in Slinky Lurex by Oseree or Missoni works well for the day into the evening. A plunging one-piece swimsuit by Yves Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello transitions an elegant sunbathing look into a sexy halter top when paired with white jeans or a bright-print maxi skirt.
Even black sheers (if the temps aren’t too high) look elegant, and a pair of heels or elegant sandals with a black one- or two-piece swimsuit makes a dramatic statement. Jade Swim makes relatively inexpensive sheer black shirt dresses and shirts that look elegant from day to evening. You can feel confident in the elegance and versatility of this choice.
Are there any must-have statement pieces or designer items that instantly elevate a poolside look?
Try pairing your print cover-up dress with a matching print bag. I recently scored a vintage print Dior bag that matched a dress I already have in my closet. Also, most luxury brands make totes that work well for business carry-alls and the beach. Oversized totes like the large Dior book tote work much better casually than in the corporate world. Still, the medium-sized totes by Givenchy, Lanvin, Saint Laurent, and even Hermes make an ultra-luxe statement while carrying your laptop and other business necessities. Chanel has a beach tote complete with a matching towel and pouch for your items every year for a super luxe beachside look that will have all heads turning. As these are strictly beach/pool items, you can enjoy wearing them year after year for mid-winter beach vacations or all summer. One caveat: they are hard to locate in the boutique, so opt for resale like this one at TheRealReal.
What shoes do you recommend for a chic beach look, even on the sand?
I love the super flat slip-on slides by Prada, Dior, and Hermes; however, as a person of tiny stature, I always love a great wedge heel in a relatively indestructible material like these Marshmellow wedges I discovered by Givenchy. They add an instant and seemingly comfortable 4.3-inch platform and heel.
What hair and makeup trends complement poolside fashion for a polished yet effortless appearance?
My beauty guru and niece, Carly Rae Smith, who works for Sephora in Trumbull, has been passionate and knowledgeable about beauty and products for years. She helped me with this guidance, and trust me, she is an expert! My one additional suggestion is Fiona Franchimon’s No. 1 Hairpins for quick, easy updos that won’t break fragile hair. Don’t leave home without a bunch of those in your bag!
Mascara: Better Than Sex Foreplay Primer by Too Faced, followed by Better Than Sex waterproof mascara for lashes that withstand even a day on a jet ski with no streaks!
Skin: Too Faced Tinted Sunscreen provides solar protection and an even skin tone
Extra skin glow: Caliray’s Cheek and lip tint
Curly hair: Ouai Wave spray gives curly hair a natural look but doesn’t feel crunchy when in the water.
Slick back ponytail: JVN Air Dry Crème controls flyaways combined with Bed Head Tigi Slick Back Stick ensures a full day of polished hold
Messy Beach Bun: Kerastase gold elixir hair oil makes a messy bun easy to do while holding the hair in place
New Tinted Sunscreens to try: Kosas Dream Beam in Sunlit (shade)

In the heart of Manhattan, where the city’s pulse quickens with the rhythm of dreams and ambitions, stands the iconic Plaza Hotel, a bastion of luxury and sophistication. Recently, this illustrious venue played host to an evening of elegance and benevolence as guests gathered for a ball in support of Save Venice, a cause close to many hearts. Yet, as invitations graced mailboxes and excitement bubbled, there was a collective sigh of anticipation and perhaps a hint of apprehension among attendees. Themed events demand more than just attendance; they require meticulous preparation, a touch of creativity, and, of course, the perfect ensemble to grace the ballroom floor. Enter Lisa Sher Chambers, a maestro of luxury fashion, whose expertise turns the daunting task of dressing for such occasions into a seamless and exhilarating experience. This year Lisa won a prize for the best on-theme mask along with my friend fashion designer Andrew Yu. Let’s delve into the enchanting world of gala glamour and the invaluable guidance of Lisa Sher Chambers as we unravel the tale of our night at the Plaza Hotel.
What key elements should a client consider when dressing for an event with a theme?
One perfect approach I tell my clients is that all events have a theme, from a business dinner, graduation party, cocktail party, and masquerade gala.
The first consideration is the event’s objective. If the aim is to win business or close a deal, choose your most polished and professional attire. A little edge helps to set yourself apart. If the event is purely social, have some fun with your outfit and take fashion risks to the extent you are comfortable.
Even weddings have a theme, and that’s romance. Consider your outfit choices if the wedding is in a unique location. Also, consider who is hosting the event, whether a wedding, a Bar/bat mitzvah, or another get-together. Think about how much you want to stand out. There are always cringe moments when a woman’s dress is too revealing or outlandish, so be mindful.
If the event is a fashion show or a sponsored event, wear the designer or brand hosting it. If the event is sponsored by Oscar de la Renta and is more intimate, you will definitely want to wear Oscar de la Renta. If new is out of the question, opt for resale, vintage, or even rental from sources.
Another more obvious consideration is the dress code and the invitation itself. If the invitation is extravagant, you won’t have to worry as much about going all out; you may want to consider upping your style game more than ever! If the invitation is understated, remember that when making outfit choices. Often, you can take cues from the color scheme of the invitation when choosing what to wear as well.
Do:
Research the hosts to understand their demographics and the demographics of the attendees.
Research less apparent details of the theme. If the event is out of state or country, use national/state colors and flowers to really set yourself apart and start conversations.
Make sure your alterations, hair, and makeup are planned well in advance. If possible and within the budget, find beauty stylists who will come to you. This is helpful in case of rain.
Can you walk us through the process of planning an outfit for a theme event?
As soon as we hear about the event, we begin planning. Remember, even for the most outlandish themes, YOU are attending and need to feel comfortable and confident. Enjoy the opportunity to really express yourself while embodying the theme, and have fun!
Start looking at upcoming looks from your favorite designers and brands. Even if those brands aren’t in your budget, similar options will likely be available for similar styles as the event approaches. Set alerts on your favorite online shopping platforms for your favorite brands and styles.
Where and when is the event? Attire for an event in the mountains would be more covered up, warm, and cozy than for an event on a beach, which may be more casual and tropical.
Is this a multiple-day event? If so, we plan the main event first and get that covered. I am even there when the clients pack their suitcases.
If this is an annual event, research images from years before to see who attends and what they are wearing.
Suppose the theme is a hat or mask event such as Carnivale or a Kentucky Derby party. Decide if you want a custom-made approach and research milliners to make the perfect look that will fit your face and head perfectly. Jackie Cicogna Millinery in Katonah recently created an award-winning mask for me for a black-tie event, and she is super creative. Another idea is to purchase a hat or mask from Etsy and add your own crystals, feathers, and other embellishments. Extra embellishments can be purchased even at Amazon, but M&J Trimming in NYC will have everything you need.
Book your hair and makeup a few weeks out to have optimal timeslots. Ensure you have your favorite eyelashes (and go for extra glam if you dare) and have a backup pair. I love Velour lashes. “Would I Lie” for the daytime and “Final Touch” for the evening. They are relatively easy to apply. Don’t reuse a pair for a special event. Please ensure the lashes are brand new, stick perfectly, and have no makeup on them.
Ensure dress fittings and alterations are scheduled appropriately to avoid last-minute stress. If possible, have the stylists come to you. If it rains, that will be super helpful.
How can a client incorporate the theme into an outfit without looking too costume-like?
That is an excellent question because, let’s face it, what appears as fashion to one person may look clownish to someone else! If the event is fashion-based, clients may wish to take more risks, but they always want to feel comfortable and confident, even if they are pushing their boundaries. Regarding the hosts, the type of event, and other attendees’ attire, you will want to push fewer boundaries for a more subdued group. I try to make sure my clients feel comfortable but do not blend into the wall!
Are there any specific colors or patterns that align well with a theme outfit that can help a client stand out in the crowd?
If the client is comfortable, mixing colors and patterns is always fun. Mixing stripes and florals is a chic look that exudes confidence. If a client doesn’t feel comfortable mixing bold patterns, color-blocking is my favorite way to add some pizazz to an outfit subtly. Lastly, there is never a wrong time for sparkle. Try more subtle beading for daytime or gold and silver sequins for evening. I am also a big fan of accessorizing with the perfect chunky jewelry or wide belts over a dress.
Can you suggest accessories that complement a theme without overpowering the outfit?
Gorgeous headbands or headpieces are a beautiful change from a showstopping necklace. Fine jewelry (necklaces, earrings, etc.) is sometimes ‘expected,’ but a headband or tiara makes a statement and is (potentially) less pricey. I am also a big fan of accessorizing with the perfect chunky jewelry or belts over a dress. Sometimes, you can take a simple dress and transform the whole look with accessories, which is always a fun project. And accessories can ideally be worn on many occasions following the event.
Do you have any tips for makeup that would enhance a theme without being too dramatic?
Velour’s “Would I Lie” half-strip eyelashes offer a subtle flirty drama to the eye and are the most natural. Ensure you have a backup pair or two in case of glue mishaps during application. I love a spray tan, which requires a full day in advance. Consider temporary hair extensions for the ‘goddess’ look, and if possible, find a makeup artist you have used before or who comes highly recommended.
